Gone are the days when finance sector jobs were limited to competing for a Probationary Officer’s post in a government-run bank. Or becoming an Insurance agent of the monopolist LIC. Or toiling to be a CA or CWA.

Today finance-related work clubbed under the Banking Finance Services Insurance (BSFI) umbrella offers a multitude of job profiles. Take your pick; they all come in well-crafted and defined verticals.

As MBA (Capital Markets) student Ashish Gupta rushes off to attend his lectures for the day, the performance of bellwether stocks is playing on his mind. The second-year student of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai is now focused on acclimatising himself with Money Market mantras.

Ashish, 25, belongs to a new generation of professionals, for whom traditional sectors like engineering, medical, hotel management, even IT hold no charm. The BFSI has captured their fancy.

Jobs in millions

Industry experts believe that the pace at which the BSFI industry is growing, it will yield a plethora of employment opportunities. It is likely to employ 8.4 million people, according to an ICRA Management Consulting Services report. Credit rating agency ICRA, states in the interim report: “The incremental human resource requirement between 2008 and 2022 is expected to be about 4.2 million” (view table BFSI Calling).

Titled ‘HR and Skill Requirements in the Banking, Financial Services and Insurance Sector (till year 2022),’ the report includes contractual employment figures too. Besides on-roll employment, contractual employment spans across all sectors through intermediaries like Direct Selling Agents (DSA), Insurance Agents and Mutual Fund Advisors.

The finance sector gets bullish

The major segments of the BFSI - Banking, Insurance, Capital Markets – are abuzz with activity, which has built up since the de-regularisation in 1991. Even though the global financial turmoil of 2008 rattled the domestic BFSI a bit (due to the sub-prime mortgage crash in the US), the recovery in India was fast. The Banking and Insurance contributed 6 percent of GDP during the year ended 2008.

Atul Kanwar abandoned his media-marketing job to start afresh in this field and IT engineer Ashish took up a diploma in capital markets. “I will make career in investment banking,” he shares his future plans. Capital markets backed by foreign investment inflows, have gained traction, and terms like bear and bull markets, volatility index, invest and re-deem, no longer sound alien.

A successful career in finance requires a head for numbers. While an MBA is the preferred credential for entry, even a graduate could apply for the sales and marketing function.

LOOK around the average university library in the West, and among the faces fixed in concentration over their books and laptops, you will see globalisation in action. The students who have come from India, or a myriad other nations, are among what UNESCO estimated, in 2009, to be 2.8 million people studying on higher education courses outside their home countries. UNESCO predicts that number will rise to 8 million by 2020, with many experts seeing such students as part of a global circulation of knowledge through universities that brings benefits to all countries.

So what prompts millions of students to leave their home nations and their loved ones to live in a country they may never have seen before? And how do students and parents deal with the potentially frightening challenge of choosing a foreign university, a decision that could shape a student’s whole life?

As with other migrants, one of the main factors driving students abroad is the search for a better life. Getting a degree from a foreign university will boost their chances of getting a good job, students believe. And there is also the advantage of gaining a qualification in English, the language for so much of the international business, media and education worlds.

But there is so much more beyond the formal qualification. Wherever a student takes their degree, studying abroad gives them a golden chance to build confidence and initiative, set their own life experiences in a fuller context, and learn to deal with the differences that otherwise create barriers between people. In the UK, that could include experiencing life in cosmopolitan, historic and dynamic cities such as London, Manchester or Edinburgh, or the more traditional life of a smaller town. Or it could include learning to love British food – hard to do for some – and sampling famous delicacies such as fish and chips. After all that, there is the chance to start a career in your adopted country, or return home with a qualification that makes you stand out from your peers.

But how do students and their parents choose a university that will deliver good teaching and a degree with a decent reputation? They obviously need to beware of the small number of institutions in the world that focus on the money brought by overseas students, offering only poor standards in return.

One of the aims of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published last month, is to help undergraduate and postgraduate students around the world in choosing their university. Teaching accounts for 30 per cent of a university’s score, including the judgments of leading academics on which institutions offer the best teaching for their subject. There is also a score for each university’s staff-student ratio, and its international mix of students and staff.

Experts point to the fact that the fees paid by students, increasingly a fact given declining public investment in higher education in so many nations, will produce a more demanding consumer and more competition among universities to attract students.

If you come with deep pockets, and are willing to spend you have plenty of power to make sure you get the education you expect.

How to crack IIT-JEE & AIEEE

Are you prepared for board exams, IIT-JEE and AIEEE? This is the question haunting many a Class 12 student!

This year the IIT-JEE is scheduled to be held on April 10 and AIEEE on May 1, 2011. Approximately five lakh students are expected to appear for IIT-JEE 2011 and the number appearing for AIEEE is expected to touch 12 lakh, making it the biggest entrance exam in our country.

A serious aspirant has separate strategies for Boards, IIT-JEE and AIEEE, however, what’s common is the Board exam syllabus. Hence, it is advisable to make sure that when preparing for engineering entrance exams all chapters relevant to Board exams are definitely covered first.

My advice to studaents is to avoid selective study in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This is because with the number of questions being more in objective type papers and with intermingling of their underlying concepts, all topics may be covered.

The syllabus is almost completely based on Class 11 and Class 12. View the exhaustive syllabus with all chapters and their topics by logging on to the IIT-JEE website.

IIT-JEE 2011

This exam includes conceptual and tricky questions. Students have to be very conscious while marking the correct answers and understand concepts across all topics, very clearly. With just 12 weeks left for the exam, a serious aspirant ideally must have completed the syllabus by now.

Exam pattern

* There are question papers of three-hour duration, each. Both question papers comprise three separate sections on Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. They will be of objective type, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.

* All questions will be Multiple Choice Type (MCQ).

* Negative marking will be followed in the checking of examinations.

* You can opt for a question paper in English or Hindi.

Cracking the exam

Students must focus on three things while preparing:

* Building the concepts

* Proper applications of concepts

* Practising of JEE-level problems

i. Time to be devoted to each subject (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)

All three are important and you must devote equal time for all subjects. Focus on topics of Class 12 Board exam, then revise Class 11 topics.

ii. Time to be devoted to regular classes at school

Majority of the topics of IIT-JEE are also covered in the Board exams, hence it is recommended that you prepare for both exams, simultaneously. Practise all NCERT problems while brushing up JEE chapters.

iii. When to start taking part/ full-length tests and how to go about analysing the results

Once you complete the syllabus of Class12, you can start taking mock IIT-JEE tests. These tests can be taken as Part Syllabi or Full Syllabi. The part tests cover topics of Class 11 and Class 12, separately, whereas full syllabi tests are based on the complete Class 11 and 12 syllabi.

For better preparation one can join a test series programme. These tests not only check the level of preparation of an individual for IIT-JEE but also makes him or her aware about their command over the subject, speed in writing the exam, topics and strong and weak areas.

iv. Expert speak

Time management: Proper planning is most important in timely preparation and dealing with the study pressure.

* Divide these crucial 24 weeks aptly in the three subjects.

* Prepare a chapter-wise, topic-wise revision schedule.

* Create short notes, list all formulae and points to remember. This will help in quick revision before the examination.

Correct methodology: The correct approach for those appearing for the first time or second (last) time is to stick to one source and not to refer to multitude of books/ study material available in the market. For example it is sufficient to go through study-packages, IIT-JEE archives, review-packages, work-books, Grand Masters Package/Equivalent, AITS/AIITS series etc, if you have enrolled at a training institute. To reap the benefits, the students, should remain focused throughout the preparation period, with a positive attitude to study with utmost concentration.

v. Do toppers prepare differently?

The key to right preparation is proper, timely planning. Toppers learn from their weak areas and practise well in time to correct them by all possible means. Correct attitude and acute focus is the key to be a topper. They divide their preparation time accordingly. They stick to a single system of preparation and have faith in themselves. Thus, they gradually build up their confidence level and are geared up to crack any difficult question. They ensure solving all previous IIT-JEE questions, keeping their concepts crystal clear.

vi. Important topics in Physics/ Chemistry/Mathematics

The syllabus of Class 11 & 12 contributes about 45% and 55% of IIT-JEE question papers respectively. When you are preparing all chapters of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, stress may be given on the following topics.

Mathematics: Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors, Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integral in Calculus.

Expert tip: Try to do as many number of Quality problems as possible to develop a sound confidence level.

Physics: Mechanics, Fluids, Heat & Thermodynamics, Waves and Sound, Capacitors & Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Optics and Modern Physics.

Expert tip: Practising quality problems is the key to success in this subject. If concepts are clear then this subject becomes all the more interesting.

Chemistry: Qualitative Analysis, Coordination Chemistry & Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Equilibrium in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, complete as a topic.

Expert tip: Just put your efforts on practice in case of Inorganic Chemistry. In case of Organic part, first build up your all basic reactions, then start do lots of practice. And for Physical Part, same thing you have to do as in case of Organic Part.

Recommendation: Students are advised to avoid selective study in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The reason being, the number of questions are more in the objective papers where there is intermingling of concepts from various topics.

Synchronising preparation for IIT-JEE, AIEEE and Board exams

For IIT-JEE, practice as much as you can. For AIEEE, many students tend to think that if they prepare for IIT-JEE, this enough for AIEEE. This is not correct as while preparing for AIEEE, as they have to prepare for CBSE exam, if they are freshers. Otherwise, those who have ped also have to prepare for CBSE. Only then he can think of getting a rank less than 20,000 in AIEEE.

* Always start from BASICS.

* Build up on the right and appropriate CONCEPT.

* Don’t refer to solutions before doing a SELF-ATTEMPT at least five times till you get the right answer.

* Avoid leaving the question in between because one must learn to understand till what level his/ her concepts are clear. One may also fail to see how close they were to the answer.

* Always try a question with a CONCEPTUAL APPROACH and not just read the question then start doing without getting the point that what question is saying.

* Your study schedule should be such that you will even easily get time for a little enjoyment daily.

* The most important thing is that you should have a time schedule as well as be REGULAR in study.

* Also, you will have to take appropriate sleep or rest of at least six hours a day if you are preparing for IIT-JEE. Otherwise your mindset for next day will not be in place.

* Never cram. Try to UNDERSTAND the problem or theory.

* Never lose your self-confidence.

* Keep in touch with intelligent students in your class or coaching centre to get that extra edge.

* Make it a point to appear in competitive Exams like OLYMPIADS, KVPY, SAT, Advanced Placements, etc, to brush up on your aptitude and analytical ability.

* Prepare as per prescribed syllabi of the exam. Don’t over-stress yourself by going beyond the syllabus.

* Whenever you complete a chapter or topic, go through that topic from NCERT as this would prepare you for the Board exams.

* Problem-solving must be qualitative than quantitative. Keep in mind that you have done problems covering all concepts within a given chapter. So, be confident.

* If one has the right “attitude” required towards preparation for the Exam then even an average students can think of clearing it.

Education gets 24 per cent hike in budget allocation

Engineering campus placements: What students must know

With the resurgence of the IT sector, engineering students have a reason to smile because companies are hiring in large numbers from single campuses. From a company’s perspective the fight for talent acquisition is getting intense as they look to expand their operations.

Leading recruiter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently announced that it made 24,000 campus offers in the fiscal year 2010-11, and in the next fiscal year, it plans to hire 37,000 engineers from campuses.

Cognizant, between October 2009 and September 2010, saw a net addition of over 27,500 employees. “On December 1, 2010, we crossed the 100,000 employee mark. We continue to hire talent aggressively across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia,” shares Shankar Srinivasan, Chief People Officer. Cognizant recently made job offers to 1,643 students of the 2011 batch of students at VIT University, Vellore. Accenture close behind made 1,309 offers to students at Amity University. What’s on offer

Companies recruit engineering graduates for roles in application and development, programme delivery, R&D, network support, security, testing. MBAs undertake a varied spectrum of roles such as IT consulting, client relationship management, and business development. Designations include Junior Engineer Trainee (JET), Junior Software Engineer and Trainee.

“We see continued demand for talent in business consulting and domain-intensive roles, apart from niche and new technologies. Also, a sustained demand for offshoring services such as IT Infrastructure Management and BPO functions,” says Srinivasan. Generic IT companies (competencies in J2EE, .NET, Mainframes, and so on), ITES, BPOs as well as areas such as Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence, Analytics and Testing, need skilled professionals.

Largest single campus hiring in 2010

Some companies may require you to sign a bond, an agreement that you will work for a stipulated minimum time frame. If you leave company prematurely, you will have to pay pre-determined monetary compensation which is actually the cost incurred on training the candidate Prof. Rana elaborates. However, Cognizant for instance does not have this practice. The phenomenon seems to be catching with companies like Wipro and HCL also doing way with it. To counter this, IBM and Accenture have started offering better salaries states ET.

The leading recruiter, TCS on other hand has made eligiblity of minimum 60% in X, XII examination making more students join against stringer norm of minimum 65% in X, XII and 68% in engineering semesters by Infosys states ET. Similarly, Accenture considers only Graduation, shares Prof. Rana.

With companies on hiring spree and sharing the placement slots the number of common offers also exists. Jadavpur University saw Cognizant made 309 offers while Wipro made 71 of which 68 were common ET elaborates. “While some companies share the slots others like Infosys and Cognizant did not come because they were not given the Day 1 slot” said Prof. Ganapathy. Amity follows a rotational policy with no company in common since last 10 years. This year Accenture grabbed the day 1 slot said Prof. Rana.

The selection process

Although the selection process differs from one company to another, the process is largely divided into three stages ie Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

Written Test: In some cases it comprises two rounds ie aptitude and technical test. The aptitude test assesses the numerical, quantitative and verbal aptitude of the candidate while the technical interview assesses a candidate’s knowledge of a specific domain or subject.

Personal Interview: It comprises technical and HR rounds. The technical round assesses a candidate on the subject know-how and the HR round assesses whether a candidate has the appetite to learn, the ability to work in teams, soft skills, cross-cultural adaptability, flexibility, and open-mindedness. The final interview also helps the company assess whether a specific candidate is the right cultural fit for the company. “With companies like HCL & TCS, top performing students in academics, have the privilege of skipping the written round and attending group discussions/ interviews directly,” adds Prof Ganapathy. HCL Technologies calls this initiative ‘Toppers-Shop’.

The companies are keen on technical and communication skills rather than certifications in Java, dot net, CISCO etc while hiring freshers. So it is advised that one must stick to fundamentals rather than add ons says Prof Rana.

Bagging the job

Prof Ganapathy discusses the ABC of skills required to make the cut. A stands for the right attitude ie readiness to learn, grow, face challenges and aptitude which means technical know-how, B - Basics, student’s fundamentals, knowledge and C- Communication. Students must have a sound technical knowledge apart from soft skills, he elaborates.

The combination of consistent academic scores, subject knowledge and good communication and interpersonal skills can pave the path to a good placement and a rewarding IT career. SRM offers mentoring and grooming for placement through the career guidance cell, which organises GD and PI training and seminars by corporates from the first year onwards to help students get placed, shares Prof. Ganapathy

Grads getting choosy

Engineering graduates who are set to join companies are making informed decisions unlike in past by getting wooed by the Brand. ET quotes few parameters on which tech firms are assessed by students before accepting the offer. These are financial performance, time taken for appraisals/ promotions and Bond agreement.

“College offers the placement slots by taking in consideration the student interaction and number of probable hires” the dean shares.

Campuses that make the cut

The defining factor while choosing the campus is the quality of students, the exposure and previous year’s experience. “Companies follow a practice of grading institutions as ABC before visiting it for recruitment,” says Prof Ganapathy.

Amity which has been visited by 35 companies placing 2,361 of 2011 batch believes that companies go by college reputation and alumni response admits Prof. Rana.

“We have a graded point system to measure and rate a college based on various parameters. Apart from student feedback, these include technical lab and computer lab infrastructure, the quality of the teaching staff, student-to-teacher ratio, papers presented, performance of their alumni in Cognizant, campus placement record, and so on, “adds Srinivasan. From a student’s perspective, it’s a good idea to also explore these parameters when taking admission to a campus as it will stand you in good stead during recruitment time.

Login Multiple Google ( ie Gmail / Orkut ) Accounts Using Firefox

May times we have multiple Google accounts of Gmail or Orkut or Google Groups etc. & we wish to access them simultaneously. One solution can be login into different accounts using different browsers but if you want to access the accounts using the same browser, then go for the trick below.

Step 1:

Open System properties ( Right clicking my computer >> Properties), choose tab advanced, click to environment variables button. In system variables section, click new. Type this information to each textbox.

variable name: "moz_no_remote" (should be all small letters and without quotes).

variable value: 1

Step 2:

open Firefox Shortcut properties (create a shortcut of Firefox and right click on it, goto properties). Add extension -p to command line (like "c: \ program files \ mozilla firefox \ firefox.exe" -p). Press Ok.

Step 3:

When you will open Firefox it will prompt for profile selection create a new profile, open Firefox using new profile, login to Gmail / Orkut.

Create as many profiles as you want to access different Google accounts. Remember, new profiles will have default network settings and other settings.

Private Networks Accessible Via Browser!

Traditionally darknets have always been regarded as the dark underbelly of the internet, but now it seems as if accessing a darknet will be as simple as having a web browser. HP researchers recently demonstrated a darknet - essentially a closed private network - that can be accessed through a browser. Some earlier darknets such as Freenet, Tor and WASTE have gained notoriety for having all sorts of objectionable content supported by the veil of anonymity they provide. These darknets need a client to access them. Finding such clients installed on laptops would often raise alarm bells for security authorities as they can be used for virtually untraceable communication aiding even terrorists.

The HP researchers however say darknets have their legitimate uses. Their creation aptly named ‘Veiled’ can be used for anonymous whistle blowing and will also bring anonymous communication to the mainstream. Darknets maintain anonymity by scattering files as fragments across thousands of servers. They also use something known as onion routing that tunnels communication through a network of relays so web sites can’t determine your location. In a podcast with Security Wire Weekly, Matt Wood one of the developers of Veiled said, “We’re leveraging what browsers have become lately, to access some of the functionality offered by darknets”.

A simple PHP file is supposed to connect the client to the rest of the darknet. The user on the other hand has to just go to a URL. The PHP file downloads JavaScript code into the browser. To understand this concept imagines a whole bunch of servers with this one PHP file on them. All of these PHP files together create the infrastructure for the Veiled darknet. Clients will then connect to each one of those nodes. The PHP files act as repeaters to all the JavaScript clients out there. The JavaScript is the one doing all the communication between clients. If, for instance, a chat were to be sent out, it would be dispersed among the darknet users. There is going to be encryption involved too. The best part is once you close your browser, your footprint vanishes instantly. It should be interesting to keep an eye on this to see if any productive applications do come out of it.

Google Wave

Google Wave

Google wave is a cool piece of technology that centers around live and concurrent editing and workflow management. What this translates into is a personal collaboration and communication tool that is fun, and perhaps an extremely powerful a platform that can be used in many different ways. Now, there is an hour and a half long presentation available on the Google wave web site. But without going through it for you to get an idea of what wave is lets put forth this analogy. Think of a blank canvas. You and a bunch of other folks are simultaneously working on it. But you’re not just using paint and brushes. Instead, you have a multitude of tools at your disposal such as videos, pictures, maps and so on that you can pin up to the canvas to better present your point. And all this happens in real time. Say one of your fellow ‘artists’ leaves. He or she can come back and rewind and playback the flow of work to see what was missed. Okay now lets get down to the real world. Your canvas is actually based in HTML5 and can be run in several of today’s browsers. To speed up communication and give added functionality it features a spell checker that auto corrects on the fly. The spell checker draws on a huge contextual linguistic model, so it knows the context of words being used and corrects them appropriately. The interface consists of panels which they call – you guessed it – waves. These waves contain conversations that can be edited in real time! Forget about hand picking text to first quote and then reply. You can just pin up your response to any part of the original communication. What you’re typing gets bounced off a server straight to the other recipients of participants of the wave. If you wish to add new participants to a wave its as simple as dragging their picture from a contacts panel on the left.

All this free for all communication might just not go down well with those who are a little reticent. That’s one of the first things that comes to mind when you watch the wave presentation; “hey I don’t want people to see what I’m typing while I’m composing a mail”. Understandable. And the developers of Wave are not unmindful of that. They’ve incorporated a feature that hides you from the rest of the Wave. Perhaps the best thing about wave is that it can be embedded on other sites. Another interesting feature of wave is that discussion and content collaboration can be done on documents in the same tool i.e. wave. So you don’t have to follow the traditional Wiki and document format.

Wave is open source. That means that developers will get their hands on a set of external APIs with which they can build widgets for wave (which they call extensions) and even discover better ways of using its functionality. App developers only have to worry about coding XML on the client side and the server takes care of updating over the wire. Collaborative games are also on the drawing board amongst other things. There is also the scope of developing server side extensions using bots. Google demoed one such bot “Rosy” that can translate 40 languages on the fly! Since Google is keeping the much of the code open source, other corporations are free to come up with their own deployments of the wave system. By the time Wave formally launches, in a year, it might very well become a refined and extremely powerful tool. We’re eagerly waiting.

Making your own FONT is EaSy!

Have you ever wanted to make text appear just like your own handwriting, but never found a font that could do the trick? Is a little personalization all you need to complete that card you just designed, but all the handwriting fonts seemed too common to use? Here’s how to get your own handwriting font using Font Capture.

First, head on to the web site (www.fontcapture.com), click on “Create your font now” and download the font template available as a PDF file. Print this sheet and write on it with your handwriting as directed and then scan the sheet (use 200 dpi or higher). Save it as a JPEG or PNG file and upload it on the web site. Name the font to identify it. You can then download your own font!

The quality of the font depends upon how you fill the template sheet, so we should keep a few things in mind. In any piece of text (say “Digit”), the baseline is the imaginary line on which all the letters sit. The uppercase letters fit between baseline and (1) – which gives us the cap height, whereas most of the lowercase letters are between baseline and (2) – which gives us the x-height. A few characters have ascender and / or descender (like ‘d’ and ‘g’ respectively), which may cross the x-height.

The template has small guide marks to roughly giving you an idea about how high the ascender can reach, the baseline, and how low the descender can reach. Try and keep the letters inside the top and bottom lines to prevent them from being cut off.

What makes a font look different from another is how the x-height and cap height are varied. As evident in the above example, the non-uniform baseline and varied x-height makes the font look more like rough handwriting, whereas uniform baseline and nearly similar ascenders and x-height will give the font a smooth, pleasant feel. Also, for making your font legible, use a black marker / gel pen and avoid using very thin strokes throughout the font, though a few elegant fonts do have varying the stroke thickness.

After a few tries, you’ll be able to get a font that nearly looks like something you’ve written on paper. But that isn’t all you do with FontCapture. It can represent alphabets using anything that you fill in the template sheet, which means you can creatively use a few characters that you don’t use often to represent some special symbols. Indian-origin scientist 'solves one of world's most complex math problems'!!!

Computer scientist Vinay Deolalikar claims to have solved maths riddle of P vs NP - one of the world's most complex and intractable mathematical problems.

Deolalikar, who works at the research arm of Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California, said that he has proven that P is not equal to NP.

The solution, if right, could earn him 1 million dollars as prize money.

P vs NP is one of the seven millennium problems set out by the Massachusetts-based Clay Mathematical Institute as being the "most difficult" to solve.

Deolalikar claims to have proven that P, which refers to problems whose solutions are easy to find and verify, is not the same as NP, which refers to problems whose solutions are almost impossible to find but easy to verify.

Scott Aaronson, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, pledged on his blog to pay Deolalikar an additional 200,000 if he is right.

"If P not equal to NP has indeed been proved, my life will change so dramatically that having to pay $200,000 will be the least of it," The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

For instance, calculating how to accommodate 400 students in 100 university rooms.

The Clay Mathematical Institute says, "To complicate matters, the Dean has provided you with a list of pairs of incompatible students, and requested that no pair from this list appear in your final choice.

"This is an example of what computer scientists call an NP-problem, since it is easy to check if a given choice of one hundred students proposed by a co-worker is satisfactory (i.e., no pair taken from your co-worker's list also appears on the list from the Dean's office), however the task of generating such a list from scratch seems to be so hard as to be completely impractical.

"Indeed, the total number of ways of choosing one hundred students from the four hundred applicants is greater than the number of atoms in the known universe.

"Thus no future civilisation could ever hope to build a supercomputer capable of solving the problem by brute force; that is, by checking every possible combination of 100 students.

"However, this apparent difficulty may only reflect the lack of ingenuity of your programmer. In fact, one of the outstanding problems in computer science is determining whether questions exist whose answer can be quickly checked, but which require an impossibly long time to solve by any direct procedure." Rich Indians Should Donate!!

Philanthropist billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet will approach rich people in India and China to urge them to donate at least half their wealth. The move is part of Gates-Buffet initiative, launched in June, that originally aimed at asking American billionaires to pledge that their wealth would be donated either during their lifetime or upon death.

The two now plan to take the idea beyond the US borders. "Mr Buffett said he and Mr Gates in coming months will meet with wealthy individuals in China and India to talk about the pledge in the hopes of adding more names from outside the US," The Wall Street Journal said.

On Wednesday, 34 people joined six billionaires, including Gates and Buffet, who have taken the pledge. They included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Director George Lucas, David Rockefeller, and media mogul Ted Turner.

US has 403 billionaires the most in the world, and New York tops the list within the country. The number two spot is taken by to China, which is followed by Russia.

This year, the Forbes list of the richest people features two Indians in the top ten. Industrialist Mukesh Ambani is at the fourth spot with a networth of USD 29 billion, followed by steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal who has a networth of USD 28.7 billion.

Although China has larger number of billionaires, ten of Asias top 25 rich are from Indian, while China has one. These include Ambani and Mittal in the top two positions, along with Azim Premji (USD 17 billion), Anil Ambani (USD 13.7 billion), Shashi and Ravi Ruia (USD 13 billion), Savitri Jindal (USD 12.2 billion), Kushal Pal Singh (USD 9 billion), Kumar Birla (USD 7.9 billion), Sunil Mittal (USD 7.8 billion) and Anil Agarwal (USD 6.4 billion dollars).

Gates with a networth of USD 53 billion dollars is the second richest man in the world after Mexican telecom czar, Carlos Slim Helu who has a net worth of USD 53.5 billion. Buffet comes in third with 47 billion dollars and has pledged to donate 99 percent of his wealth.

"In 2006, I made a commitment to gradually give all of my Berkshire Hathaway stock to philanthropic foundations. I couldn''t be happier with that decision," he wrote in a pledge letter.

"Now, Bill and Melinda Gates and I are asking hundreds of rich Americans to pledge at least 50 per cent of their wealth to charity." Bill and Melinda Gates have given more than $28 billion to their foundation since it was founded in 1994 that focuses on health and education.

"We have committed the vast majority of our assets to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help stop preventable deaths such as these, and to tear down other barriers to health and education that prevent people from making the very most of their lives," Gates wrote in his pledge.

Super Seller Alto Gets a Facelift

In the wake of a soaring competition in the small car segment and a nose-diving market share, India’s largest carmaker Maruti has launched a more powerful version of its largest selling model Alto. The new Alto K-10 is powered by a bigger 1-litre (998 CC) K series engine that also powers the Estilo, A-Star and Wagon R.

Maruti’s move will bring cheer to those customers who thought the largest selling five-seater car was underpowered. Currently, the Alto’s top-end Lxi model contributes to 70 per cent of sales and competes with the Rs 2.7-lakh Hyundai Santro standard and the Chevy Spark that costs Rs 3.23 lakh. The new Alto is claimed to return 20.2 kmpl and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 13.3 seconds.

Maruti has refurbished the suspension and braking system to cope with the enhanced motor. Moreover, it’s is longer by 125mm to accommodate the bigger K-series engine. Stay Healthy this Monsoon

During the monsoon, people tend to fall sick, develop a cold, cough, fever and respiratory tract infections. Others experience indigestion, gas and bloating. One needs to be careful about the food and water they consume.

On the one hand, we're told to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. But eating them during the monsoon becomes questionable. Fruits and vegetables are exposed to microbes while being delivered after harvestation. In addition, pesticides sprayed also stick to the surface. Fruits and vegetables need to be washed thoroughly, especially ones that are eaten raw.

Stay clean

-You can wash fruits and vegetables under running water with a soft brush. Most of the dirt and pesticides are washed away in this manner.

-You can also soak fruits and vegetables in a pot of water (approximately 2 litres), add half a cup of white vinegar and 2 tbsp of salt.

-You may also choose to spray them with in a water-vinegar solution (1-1).

-Another easy way is to add 4 tbsp of salt to 1 glass of lemon juice, put it in a pot of water (approximately 2 litres) and soak for 5 mins. Then rinse under running water.

-To make a stronger solution mix 4 tbsp of salt with the juice of 1 lemon, put it in a pot and with approximately 2 litres of water and 100 ml of vinegar. Soak the fruits and vegetables for five minutes and then rinse under running water.

-You may also choose to use potassium permanganate to clean fruits and vegetables. Soak them in potassium permanganate for about five minutes and then rinse. This is very effective in washing away germs, bacteria and pesticides.

Health is key

-Avoid street fruits, golas, chaat, pre-cut fruits, chutney, leafy vegetables, pickles, pakodas, and juices from roadside vendors.

-If you are eating out, make sure the place that you have chosen confirms to some basic standards of quality and hygiene. Else you may contract a serious infection or water borne disease.

-Avoid cooking in bulk as it may get spoilt. Also, freshly prepared food tends to be more nutritious.

-Avoid greasy meals and fried foods, and reduce your intake of non-veg food.

-Have lighter meat preparations like soups and stews.

-Make liberal use of ginger, pepper and pipli to improve your digestion. Garlic, asofoetida, sonth, turmeric, coriander and jeera enhance your digestive power.

-Eat moderate quantities of food as the body finds it harder to digest if you overeat. -Drink warm beverages; add mint or ginger, or dry ginger powder to tea.

-Moong dal is easy to digest and should be your dal of choice.

-Avoid eating food straight out of the fridge. Fresh foods are the best, but if there's food stored in the fridge, heat it before eating.

BlackBerry can be hacked!!!

Research in Motion's resistance to giving governments access to its BlackBerry network misses a major point -- authorities could probably hack the data on their own if they want it badly enough, security experts say.

Indeed, a major attack against BlackBerry users by a telecom in the United Arab Emirates employed that very tactic a year ago, according to RIM. Experts say other malicious programs are likely to be lurking around, readying to be sprung.

India, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates say they need RIM's cooperation so they can decode messages scrambled with BlackBerry's proprietary technology. They have threatened to restrict RIM's operations if the company won't meet their demands, which they say are driven by national security concerns.

But if RIM doesn't back down, the governments themselves could instead choose to hack into the BlackBerry network.

"I could design a good hundred ways to gain access," said Bruce Schneier, a security expert who is chief security technology officer for BT.

Officials with Canada's RIM did not respond to a request for comment.

Security experts say they'd almost certainly attack at the network's most vulnerable points: the BlackBerry smartphone itself and the BlackBerry server. Those two pieces of equipment sit at either end of the network where they offer would-be hackers access to unscrambled data.

Last year's attack in the UAE is a good example of how a hacker might work. It employed spyware created by SS8, a closely held U.S. security firm, RIM says.

Emirates Telecommunications Corp, the UAE's largest telecoms operator, sent the program to its BlackBerry disguised as a software update. It told its customers that the it would enhance the performance of their equipment, but RIM says it was mainly intended to tap into their communications.

The telecom declined comment at the time.

RIM said it quickly discovered the so-called "malware" because of a glitch in its implementation, and told users not to install it on their phones. But hackers might go undetected, experts say.

To prove the point, a security researcher named Tyler Shields released a spyware program earlier this year for attacking BlackBerries via the handset. It allows hackers to intercept messages that reach the device and use its microphone to tap conversations in the immediate vicinity of the phone.

"I wanted to demonstrate that BlackBerry handhelds are susceptible to spyware," said Shields, who works for the Burlington, Massachusetts-based security firm Veracode Inc.

The program, dubbed TXSBBSpy, did not include installation software as Shields never intended it to be used. He only wanted to show the BlackBerry was not unhackable.

A successful attack on a Blackberry Enterprise Server could prove even more devastating because each server manages data for hundreds of users.

Hackers could write code to take advantage of vulnerabilities in the software that runs those servers, said Chet Wisniewski, senior security adviser at Sophos, anti-virus software maker. Such a program would allow outsiders to view messages from all the users hooked up to the computer via their handsets

London: People with pets have the filthiest kitchen floors, according to a study.

A house with a dog or a cat will typically have bacteria levels almost 20 times higher than one without. That’s dirtier than an average pub toilet seat, reports a news website.

Surprisingly, having children in a house - however messy - makes only a negligible difference.

Microbiologists at Leeds Metropolitan University swabbed sample areas from kitchen floors and measured bacteria levels.

A couple with no children scored 167 in the study and a couple with children scored 232. But a couple with children and pets scored 2,844.

Bacteria levels in homes with pets were even higher than for a student house.

"This was especially marked in the cases of the married couple with children and pets, where there was a 10,000-fold reduction in bacterial contamination after using a clean mop," said Alan Edmondson.

Apple's problem: Too much cash

Apple Inc Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer faces a dilemma that perhaps every finance chief wishes to have: obscene amounts of cash and nowhere to put it.

The iPhone, iPad, iPod and Mac computer maker has accumulated a cash pile that totals nearly $46 billion, the biggest cash hoard among U.S. tech companies and equivalent to one-fifth of Apple's market capitalization.

And yet, due to an ultra-conservative investment strategy and low interest rates, that cash is earning next to nothing for Apple, which rarely makes acquisitions and does not pay a regular dividend or buy back stock.

"Oppenheimer probably has the most enviable CFO job on the planet," joked Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin, who has been following Apple since the early 1980s.

Analysts say Apple's near-death experience in the 1990s helps explain why it likes to remain liquid by investing in safe but low-yielding U.S. Treasury and agency debt.

The company earned a mere 0.76 percent on its cash and investments in its most recent quarter, down from 1.43 percent in fiscal 2009, 3.44 percent in 2008 and 5.27 percent in 2007.

Despite these low returns, Apple does not face much pressure these days to put its cash to better use. Any dissenting investors are probably appeased by the meteoric rise in the company's share price, which has tripled since 2007.

"When a company is growing as fast as Apple, cash management is pretty far back in people's thoughts," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves.

"But that'll change at some point," he added, estimating that Apple's cash could hit a cool $65 billion by the end of fiscal 2011 if the company continued to generate free cash flow at the current pace.

For now, Oppenheimer has a mantra that he repeats on every quarterly earnings conference call: He tells Wall Street that Apple's investment priority is the "preservation of capital" with a focus on "short-dated, high-quality investments."

Bajarin said Oppenheimer's cautious approach dates from his time at Automatic Data Processing Inc, but Apple's conservatism is also driven by Chief Executive Steve Jobs.

Both Jobs, 55, and Oppenheimer, 47, subscribe to the Silicon Valley maxim that "only the paranoid survive," he said.

They remember the dark days when Apple was struggling to stay alive and had to lay off thousands to cut costs. When Oppenheimer joined the company in 1996 as its controller for the Americas, a series of bad management decisions had eroded profits and sent its share price diving to less than $5.

Things got so bad that one of the first things Jobs did when he returned to Apple was take a lifeline in the form of a $150 million investment from Microsoft Corp in 1997.

A TIGHT SHIP

While those days may be long gone, fiscal prudence could be here to stay. Apple's financial estimates are almost comically conservative, delivered every quarter by Oppenheimer, who has rarely strayed from the script since he became CFO in 2004.

The Cupertino, California-based company runs a tight ship: total revenue rose 75 percent from fiscal 2007 through 2009, while operating expense rose just 45 percent.

Although Apple is famous for innovation, research and development costs only account for 3 percent of revenue -- far lower than at Microsoft and Cisco Systems Inc, due in part to Apple's narrow product portfolio. (See graphic comparing Apple to some peers link.reuters.com/rug23n)

Apple does not appear to pay especially high salaries, either. According to career website glassdoor.com, which relies on anonymous users sharing their salary data, an Apple software engineer earns around $100,000 per year, roughly the same as engineers at Google Inc.

Production costs are also kept low, due to contract manufacturers like Foxconn International Holdings Ltd.

"They've entered a lot of new markets without a significant capital investment ... without really betting the farm," said Hudson Square analyst Daniel Ernst. "They haven't really needed to," he said, pointing to the iPhone as an example.

The only big-ticket spend that Apple has disclosed is a $1 billion data center that it is building in North Carolina, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

KEEPING POWDER DRY

While many top tech companies are awash in cash, unlike Apple, they tend to put excess cash to use. For example, Intel Corp and Microsoft pay dividends; Cisco and International Business Machines Corp buy back big chunks of stock; and Hewlett-Packard Co and Oracle Corp are serial acquirers.

Apple makes few acquisitions because it develops products internally, and pays little for what it does buy. Analysts say they do not expect Oppenheimer -- who told CFO Magazine in 2000 that he learned finance from his father and grandfather -- to make significant bets with Apple's cash in the next few years.

Jobs has said that Apple could do something "big and bold" if needed, but he has also expressed no interest in a share buyback or a dividend. The company last repurchased shares in 2001 and scrapped its last dividend after 1995.

"I'm not as concerned as some shareholders might be about their immediate plans for cash, I prefer that they not rush," said Erick Maronak, chief investment officer for the Victory Large Cap Growth Fund, which has Apple as its largest holding.

"If you look at the history of companies deploying excess cash, it's not a very good track record," he said.

One case in point is Microsoft, whose share price is still below the level it reached in 2004, when the software maker declared a $32 billion one-time dividend that sapped up more than half of its cash balance.

based on the adventures of three mechanical engineering students (friends)
Hari Kumar (the narrator), Ryan Oberoi, and Alok Gupta, who fail to cope with the grading system of the IITs. The three hostelmates - Alok, Hari and Ryan get off to a bad start in IIT - they screw up the first class quiz. And while they try to make amends, things only get worse.

This is an excellent book for beginners! The lessons are easy to understand. It is a well written book and was well worth the money. If you were to rip this book in half and just keep the reference grammar section, you'd still have a bargain. The twenty lessons are excellent and are also a bargain on their own.

4. The Oxford-Duden Pictorial French and English Dictionary by Genevieve Lebaut, M. Clark, Bernadette Mohan, Paperback: 880 pages, Publisher: Oxford University Press.

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Dictionaries provide parallel English and foreign word lists containing 29,000 items for each language. Based on the premise that pictures can more clearly convey certain kinds of information, these dictionaries present a list of vocabulary relating to a subject together with a picture illustrating that subject.
